I want to hook up a 5kw generator on a remote island from a shed to feed a cabin 60 ft. away. What would be the best way to ground the line...a grounding rod or plate near the generator or near the breaker panel at the cabin?

Because the purpose of earth grounding is to reduce the voltage rise on the system in the event of a lightning strike, or accidental contact with the conductors of another grounded system, the grounding could be done at either end of the line.
It is much more important for personel safety that the equipment and conductor enclosures be properly bonded.

Speaking of drowning, I wish somebody would "drown" those personal watercraft (seadoos) that disturb the peace and quiet at our humble cabin.

Turn your hearing aid off.
I couldn't resist. It isn't often that I get to use the new lines my apprentices teach me.

A remote island, a cabin, and a generator to drown out the sound of the pesky birds. Now that is luxury!
